'Hula' (hull appendage), conceived by designer Clay Oliver, was a panel of rigid carbon fiber that fitted like a second hull to Team New Zealand yacht for the 2003 America's Cup. ^^^The idea was to give the sloop additional waterline length and, in theory, more speed. The gap between the hula and the hull is slightly wider than a credit card, just a few millimetres. It is positioned about a metre behind the keel, and runs back behind the rudder, effectively adding length and volume to the aft section of the boat. Under the rules, the hula can't touch the hull except for a narrow area along the centerline where it's attached.

Loic Caradec was taking enormous risks for his life in sailing this craft alone. Auto-pilots were useless and Loic was obliged to steer day and night until he became exhausted. The Argos beacon stopped its signal on November 14. Florence Arthaud later discovered the catamaran capsized with nobody aboard.
