Kariba Dam, Zimbabwe is located approximately halfway down the Zambezi River. The dam was surrounded by controversy, both environmentally and socially, it is an impressive monument to man’s engineering expertise.^^^ The massive valley, which now forms Lake Kariba has survived, with most plant and animal species having adapted to the changed conditions. Building the dam wall began in the late 1950s. Well over a million cubic metres of concrete was poured into the 36.6 metre high wall with a thickness of over twenty four metres to sustain the pressure of nearly ten million litres of water passing through the spillway each second. At the end of 1958, the sluice gates were closed and in 1963 the maximum level was reached.

The unveiling of the keel of "Team New Zealand" before the start of the Louis Vuitton Cup final 2002/2003, Auckland, New Zealand. ^^^"Team New Zealand" created much speculation with their innovative, very long and thin bulb which resembles a cruise missile, unlike the usual torpedo shape of the bulbs. Even more of a surprise was the revelation of a second skin on their hull effectively making the boat one meter longer than the maximum boat length, and allowed by the rules provided there was proof that the skin did not at any time touch the actual hull. Named the "Hula", this extra appendage was naturally very controversial.

Frank Murdoch, 82, in conversation with Thomas Edward Brodie Sopwith, 53, at Calshot Spit, near Southampton. August 1986, ^^^during the relaunching of the empty steel hull of J-Class "Endeavour". A Belgium-born structural engineer and Thomas Sopwith's employee, Murdoch had a key role during the building and the rigging of both Endeavour in 1934 and 1937.Remarkably, the old man may have also saved England from a German invasion. In February 1936, Sopwith sent him to Germany to have a look at the M.A.N diesel engines ordered for his new motor-yacht "Philante". Some German friends, who did not liked Hitler's projects, took a serious risk in inviting Frank to watch the hundreds of secretly built U-Boat engines. The alarming report that Frank gave to Sopwith led the Chairman of Hawker Aircraft's to build 1000 Hurricane monoplanes from his own pocket. Murdoch was charged with the awesome responsibility of mass-producing the aircraft. Without that decision, the issue of the later Battle of Britain would have been totally different.
